This past Saturday, a member of the USNA New Jersey Parents Club had the pleasure of visiting Calvary Methodist Church in Annapolis, where a dedicated group of volunteers carried on a beloved tradition—baking cookies for our Midshipmen. Led by Joseph “Lunchbox” Gryer, USNA ’99, this cherished practice has thrived for over 40 years. This week’s efforts culminated in the delivery of 800 dozen cookies to our Midshipmen, a feat that required 23 dozen eggs, 150 pounds of flour, 75 pounds of sugar, 60 pounds of butter and shortening, and 100 pounds of chocolate.
Approximately 30 volunteers from both the youth ministry and adult groups participated in baking throughout the day. Historically, February marks their busiest month, with production peaking at around 800 dozen cookies. This success is largely due to the generosity and support of USNA Parents Clubs, alumni groups, and families of Midshipmen. However, since the pandemic, production has dropped to an average of 450 dozen. The proceeds from cookie sales help offset the costs of summer youth ministry trips.
The Calvary Cookie Factory will continue to bake until late April. Click the link below if you would like to purchase some of these delicious cookies for your Midshipman or their entire company!
